What is localised cryotherapy?
Localised cryotherapy applies controlled cooling to a selected part of the body, rather than exposing the entire body to cold temperatures. The exact effect, temperature and safe treatment duration depend on the specific equipment and its operating protocol.
Seven potential benefits and characteristics
1. Temporary discomfort relief
Cooling can reduce the activity of pain-sensitive nerves, offering short-term relief from localised aches. It is not a substitute for assessing persistent or unexplained pain.
2. Temporary reduction in swelling
Cold may narrow superficial blood vessels and help limit fluid accumulation in some acute soft-tissue situations. Effects depend on the injury and treatment method; persistent or unexplained swelling requires medical advice.
3. Post-exercise soreness support
Some cold-therapy research reports reduced perceived soreness after physical activity. Evidence that it restores strength, speeds tissue healing or improves athletic performance is less certain.
4. Short-term muscle comfort
Targeted cooling can temporarily reduce uncomfortable muscle sensations after exertion. Individual responses vary.
5. Changes in local inflammatory responses
Cold exposure affects local circulation and some inflammatory processes. That does not mean a commercial localised cryotherapy session can treat arthritis, inflammatory diseases or injuries.
6. Targeted rather than whole-body cooling
A selected area can be cooled without undertaking a whole-body cold exposure session. Suitability and contraindications still matter.
7. A refreshing sensory experience
Some people enjoy the invigorating sensation of carefully controlled cooling. This is subjective, not a proven clinical treatment outcome.
What does the evidence actually support?
Research on cold packs, postoperative cooling and cold-water immersion suggests some short-term benefits for pain and exercise-related soreness, but findings differ across methods, people and outcomes. Improvements in swelling, recovery performance and long-term function are inconsistent. Some observed effects are small and may not be clinically meaningful.
Important: Results obtained using ice packs, water immersion or medical cooling systems cannot automatically be transferred to Lumaterra's particular equipment. Device-specific evidence, manufacturer instructions and applicable regulatory requirements determine what can responsibly be claimed.
Safety and suitability first
Cold exposure may cause burns or tissue injury if incorrectly applied. We assess suitability before treatment and follow equipment-specific instructions rather than assuming one duration fits everyone.
- Tell us about Raynaud's phenomenon, cold hypersensitivity, cold urticaria or any unusual reaction to cold.
- Disclose impaired sensation, neuropathy, circulation problems, open wounds or relevant skin conditions.
- Seek appropriate medical assessment for unexplained swelling, significant acute injuries, severe or persistent pain, and suspected medical conditions.
- Stop a session and tell the operator immediately if cooling causes unusual pain, numbness, skin changes, dizziness or distress.
Session length: A 10-minute appointment must not be assumed safe or appropriate for every device or body area. Actual exposure time and settings are determined by the model-specific operating instructions, screening and operator assessment.
How Lumaterra fits cryotherapy into wellbeing
Our focus is education-led relaxation and wellbeing, not diagnosis or medical treatment. Depending on suitability and current service availability, localised cooling may be booked individually or explored alongside our other wellbeing experiences. Each modality has its own safety considerations; combining them is not a claim of additional medical benefit.
